UMK

Our History

Established in 2005, UMK is a 51% black owned company and, is the 4th largest manganese producer in South Africa.

After numerous years of groundwork and extensive exploration of the eight farms for which prospecting rights were granted, 361 boreholes were drilled, the results of which were astounding, with the most significant manganese deposits being found on Botha, Smartt and Rissik Farms.

In 2018 the mineral resources were estimated at more than 500Mt with 280Mt in Measured and Indicated categories. Mineral Reserves for Open Pit Mining are estimated at 112 Mt that provides a Life of Open Pit Mine of more than 30 years.

Additionally, resources, potentially minable underground can reach
150 Mt.

The underground reserves will be confirmed after completion of infill drilling and a pre-feasibility study, currently in progress.

Social Responsibilities

Communities

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSI) is an integral part of UMK, as we believe that every upliftment project implemented by our company contributes to the creation of the South African promise of “a better life for all”. With this in mind we continuously strive to strengthen our commitment to sustainable development by building mutually beneficial relations with our stakeholders and contributing to the communities within we operate. Our CSI initiatives span over a number of categories, including education, small business development and community infrastructure. Education is the primary focus area of our CSI initiatives as we believe in providing the leaders of tomorrow with every possible advantage. Uplifting the community within the area we operate gives them the ability to truly empower themselves. Projects, like providing necessary infrastructure, go a long way towards making a sustainable difference which UMK will remain committed to.

We uphold the values of honesty, partnership and fairness in our relationships with stakeholders to foster constructive relationships and make every attempt to understand and meet their expectations by recognising that our social, economic and environmental responsibilities are intergral to our business. In this instance we recognise as our most significant stakeholders our Employees (including unions), Government (including regulators) by virtue of its critical role in forming legislation and therefore its ability to influence the business and our license to operate.
